About Itasca Food

This blog is about local food in Northern Minnesota. I am really interested in promoting locally produced food, whether its grown here or just cooked here. I am not a professional foodie nor am I a professional restaurant reviewer. What you get here will be simple stories about eating or cooking local food. This will include stories about my visits to restaurants. I also want to encourage others to share their stories and experiences here.

My name is Ross Williams and my wife Marcia Anderson is the director of the Grand Rapids Area Library. I will talk more about our food preferences later, but there are two things that shape our choices. Marcia does not eat red meat (beef, pork, lamb, etc). I have high cholesterol and two cardiac stents, so I avoid fried foods and anything else that is high in saturated fat. We usually share food, so our personal preferences often effect both of our choices.

We are relative newcomers to living in the area, we moved to Grand Rapids in 2005. But I  have deep roots since both of my parents come from the Iron Range and most of my cousins living in northern Minnesota. A family cabin north of Grand Rapids has made me a frequent visitor to the area for my entire life. But I have by no means visited every restaurant in the region - or even a significant sample. I may not have tried some local foods that "everyone" knows about. Let me know if there are places you think produce unique local food by leaving a comment below.

Also tune in to 91.7 KAXE on Wednesday mornings around 7:30 to listen to Maggie Montgomery's interviews with local food producers across the region.
